US OPEN ’21: A look back at key anniversaries in the US Open

A look back at the U.S. Open from 10 years ago to 100 years ago offers a mixture of record performances and blown putts, of playoffs and perhaps one of the most underappreciated victories by a major champion. That belongs to Lloyd Mangrum, who won his only U.S. Open 75 years ago. It also was his only major, but not his only important trophy. Mangrum had won Purple Hearts from being wounded at Normandy Beach on D-Day and at the Battle of the Bulge.
