Mali opposition to protest after rejecting mediators’ plan
BAMAKO, Mali (AP) — Mali’s political opposition are calling for demonstrations to resume after rejecting a plan put forth by regional mediators. The regional bloc known as ECOWAS proposed that Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita create a unity government that would force him to share power. The opposition, though, says Keita must step down entirely, a move that ECOWAS is not willing to consider. Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara is expected in the Malian capital on Monday as efforts continue to bring an end to the impasse that has led tens of thousands to protest in the streets in recent weeks. At least 12 people have died as security forces tried to put an end to the protests.
