In Alabama, a vote to keep Confederate monument protections

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama lawmakers have rejected legislation that would give cities and counties in the Dep South state a possible avenue to take down Confederate monuments and relocate them elsewhere. An Alabama House committee refused on Wednesday to advance the bill that would revise 2017 Alabama Memorial Preservation Act. The proposal sought to allow cities and counties to request permission from a state committee to move the monuments to another location, such as a park or state agency land, for preservation. The Democratic sponsor said she believed opposition to the bill was rooted in racism and she vows to reintroduce the bill in the future.
