PARIS (AP) — French Prime Minister Jean Castex has vowed tougher and faster punishment for people who attack police, feeling endangered, disrepected by the courts and some citizens. Castex, leading a solemn tribute Tuesday in Avignon to the latest officer killed in the line of duty, reiterated assurances made a day earlier to unions that police would get solid backing from courts for those arrested and for police aggressed on duty. Masson was killed last week after a routine check of a street corner frequented by drug dealers. It was the second deadly attack on police in less than two weeks. Security has become a political issue ahead of France’s presidential election next year.
