Polish legal body rejects prosecutor request to arrest judge

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A controversial disciplinary body within Poland’s Supreme Court has rejected a prosecutor’s request to arrest a judge who has become a symbol of resistance for those who believe judicial independence is threatened in the country. The Disciplinary Chamber created by the populist party that governs Poland decided after two days of deliberations not to order the arrest of Judge Igor Tuleya. The governing party accuses Tuleya of behaving like a political activist and accuses him of criminal breach of secrecy for allowing journalists into his court room for a verdict in 2017. His ruling went against the interests of the party. Government critics consider the charges against him to be bogus.
