But the official winner of the Derby is still undecided amid the investigation into Bob Baffert’s Medina Spirit. It could turn out that trainer Brad Cox goes 2 for 3 with two different horses if Medina Spirit is disqualified for failing a postrace drug test. Mandaloun could be elevated to Derby winner. Essential Quality won the Belmont. Rombauer winning the Preakness also muddies the discussion of who’s the best 3-year-old in the country. Essential Quality is probably at the peak of the gray area that was this Triple Crown season.
