Dianne Durham, the first Black woman to win a US women’s gymnastics national title, has died. She was 52. Durham’s husband says she died in Chicago following a short illness. Durham made history at the 1983 U.S. national championships when she became the first Black woman to finish atop the podium. Durham’s breakthrough paved the way for other Black female gymnasts to succeed, including Olympic champions Simone Biles and Gabby Douglas.
