Despite 3-week lockdown, many remain on the move in Turkey

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish security forces are patrolling main streets and staffing checkpoints at city entrances and exists to enforce Turkey’s strictest COVID-19 lockdown to date. Restrictions imposed by  Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan prohibit residents from leaving their homes except to shop for groceries or to meet other essential needs. The lockdown took effect Thursday evening and is set to last until May 17. Many people nonetheless were on the move on Friday. The government exempted some categories of people and businesses to avoid shutting down the economy completely. They include tourists, health workers, law enforcement officers, factory and agriculture workers, and employees of supply chain and logistics companies.
