CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) — Bobsledding tradition in Cortina goes back nearly a century and locals are hoping that the Eugenio Monti track can be reopened for the 2026 Olympics in the Italian resort. The sliding venue for 2026 remains a source of debate because of concern from the International Olympic Committee about runaway spending and white elephant venues. The IOC has suggested holding sliding events at an active track in Switzerland or Austria. But Italian officials are intent on spending the $60 million required to rebuild the Cortina track. Italian Winter Sports Federation president Flavio Roda says if the Olympics are going to be in Italy then “we’re hosting them in Italy.”
