Hunting to end hunger

LEWISBURG Ky. – Two charity groups, Open Hearts Open Hands and Hunters for the Hungry, are working with local hunters and butchers to help fight hunger this holiday season.

Uncle and niece Josh Goodhue and Peyton Woodward are two parts of a chain of local taxidermists and butchers who take in fresh deer and package them up for both OHOH and HoH, along with Farmstead Butcher Block. Organizer Josh Goodhue says they have almost exceeded the amount they received last year.

“Last year, we kind of started friends, family, you know, whoever knows somebody, you know, we would do it that way. And we were able to take in total last year was 989 pounds. This year, we have already processed and donated in hand at Open Heart 960 pounds. So, we’re just shy of last year’s total,” Goodhue said.

The Logan County group asks no questions and supplies families in need with game for their freezer, with prices high, many people need help.

Intake processor Peyton Woodward says it has even attracted new hunters to a good cause.

“So usually when I drop off, I ask their story. I said, ‘What’s the story on this deer?’ We actually had two kiddos. It was their first time hunting, and they wanted to donate their deer, and they were so proud to be able to donate their deer,” Woodward said.

The group also accepts monetary donations at their P.O 214 in Lewisburg or at OHOH1 on PayPal.
