Hundreds pack Bowling Green Ballpark for annual Relay for Life walk

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- The Bowling Green Hot Rods may have been out of town, but that didn’t stop hundreds of people from coming out to to Bowling Green Ballpark on Friday night.

The American Cancer Society held its 24th annual Relay for Life walk at the downtown Bowling Green sports venue. It marked the first time the event was held at the ballpark. In previous years, the fundraising walk took place around the football field at Bowling Green High School.

More than 1,500 people joined in on the festivities, including dozens of cancer survivors. This year’s goal was to raise more than $300,000 for the American Cancer Society. Year after year, the Bowling Green Relay for Life walk generates more money than any other American Cancer Society chapter in Kentucky.

Survivors had their own walk, which occurred on the baseball field, while other supporters walked around the stadium’s concourse. Participants were treated to numerous activities and food vendors.

Kim Lindgren, who lost her mother to cancer in 2012, said the event is one that brings together the entire community.

“It’s a real opportunity to come out and not only make a difference in the lives of people, the people who live in our very own community, but it’s a fun, family event,” Lindgren said. “There’s all sorts of things here to do and ways to give back and be a part of this.”

WNKY was a proud sponsor of the event.
