How to support loved ones with PTSD during the Fourth of July
BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- With Fourth of July fireworks popping off, everyone’s response may be different. For many, the loud booms and flashing lights can trigger symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Erica Hanner, a LifeSkills dual diagnosis therapist, says fireworks can resemble traumatic experiences like gunfire, explosions or even car accidents.
“People with PTSD tend to be super hypersensitive to loud noises, bright flashes, even burning smells,” she explains. One way to support those affected is by encouraging open communication.
“Talking with family members ahead of time and respecting their boundaries can be very helpful in the healing process,” Hanner adds.
Everyone’s trauma is unique, so empathy and understanding are key.
