How to prevent package thefts with online deals underway
(CNN, KING) – It’s one of the summer’s biggest weeks for online sales.
Amazon is kicking off its Prime Day deals this week. Discounts began on July 8 and last through July 11.
Other retailers are also slashing prices to compete, but all of those purchases mean packages are outside of your door, and it’s an opportunity for thieves.
Richard Rocha with Amazon says Prime Day members bought 375 million items worldwide in 2023. Other big box retailers are also slashing prices.
Corie Colliton with Security.org says they looked at crime data and found more than 58 million packages were stolen in 2024.
While Amazon says the vast majority of packages are delivery without any issues, there are things customers can do to make sure their items are safe.
Rocha says, “They’re able to track their packages in real time when they’re about to be delivered, and when they do get delivered, there’s a photo that’s sent to you so you can see exactly where it’s put.”
He also says customers can leave notes about deliveries, such as “drop off behind the house.”
Certain items can be delivered to a hub locker at no additional cost. In addition, you can schedule to have your items delivered on a day you are home.
So what should you do if your packages are stolen?
Amazon says call customer service to get it fixed, and contact your local police.
Colliton says package theft is considered a crime that is taking place on your personal property.
Although security cameras can also help catch thieves in the act, law enforcement recommends not engaging with the thief.
