How high prices are impacting local farmers

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Prices for tools, seed, soil and so much more have climbed throughout the country, and for many local farmers like Robert Grant, this affects their pockets.

Robert Grant, the owner of Grant’s Farm and Produce, says, “I mean, it’s not hard work, but it’s not easy work. But now it’s just, it’s been to get a decent little business, but it’s hard to make a dollar with it.”

Caleb Ragland, a farmer and chairman of the American Soybean Association, tells us, “Hands down, this is the most volatile I’ve ever experienced. And it’s also the highest expense and risk.”

Most us farmers are facing higher input costs and tighter profit margins, resulting in reduced net income despite steady or increased crop production.

The work put in by all farmers sustains families and businesses year after year, but beyond the fields, farming has become a part of the economic backbone of the United States.

Ragland also says, “Across our country, it’s also a big concern for the economies of our state, our counties and local communities, because agriculture is a huge part of Kentucky. It’s a huge part of this whole country. “
