How EMS workers are responding to an increase in overdoses
BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- According to Med Center EMS, drug overdoses have become increasingly common, a trend that has alarmed local emergency services.
A Med Center supervisor shared that while EMS workers previously saw a few overdoses each month, they are now encountering several cases each week. The severity of these incidents has notably escalated, with fentanyl being a significant factor.
Stephon Parrot, advanced EMT field supervisor, revealed that out of 2,250 overdose deaths last year, 73% were related to fentanyl. This potent drug is not only a threat to users but can also pose risks to others, such as teachers handling confiscated vapes.
“Fentanyl can be in anything,” Parrot cautioned, advising to always handle potential substances with gloves.
Additionally, Xylazine, or Tranq, a drug used to tranquilize horses, is becoming more prevalent. Unfortunately, there is no antidote for Xylazine overdoses, adding another layer of concern for emergency responders.
