HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. – A phone charger is believed to be the cause of an early morning fire in Hopkinsville, according to first responders.

In a social media post, Hopkinsville Fire/EMS says shortly before a morning shift change on Wednesday, firefighters were alerted to a fire in a bedroom along Black Oak Lane in Hopkinsville.

Fire personnel say the caller stated the outlet was smoking with visible flames.

Two stations responded in four minutes, the department says. Crews say they located a portable phone charging bank on fire on a nightstand next to the bed.

According to first responders, due to swift actions of those on scene, nothing else in the room ignited. The home was ventilated, and the family was allowed to return, the department says.

“This is a stark reminder to use only UL-approved devices, especially those that contain lithium-ion batteries. When not using these devices, make sure they are unplugged. Never charge them unattended,” Hopkinsville Fire/EMS stated.
