Holiday decoration tips from Kentucky Poison Control Center at Norton Children’s

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – As we head into December, many families are starting to decorate for the holidays, but some items can be dangerous for young children.

Health experts say decorations with small berries, like holly or mistletoe, can be a choking hazard.

Snow globes can also be risky — as many contain antifreeze inside.

Parents should also keep an eye on candles and older ornaments that may contain lead paint or mercury.

If an accident does happen, you’re urged to contact the Kentucky Poison Control Center at Norton Children’s Hospital.

“When your kids see new things, they are going to see what they taste like. So there’s always that danger, whether it’s something they get as a present, whether it’s something you got as a present, if it’s new in the household, they might try to give it a lick, a taste. The good news is that we are open 24/7. We’re open on Christmas morning, so if something happens, just give us a call, and we’re more than happy to help you. That’s why we’re open,” Maria Chapman with the Poison Control Center says.

Any ornaments you have that may be dangerous should be put higher on the tree. If you have any issues, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
