Historic bell found at the Edmonson County Courthouse

BROWNSVILLE, Ky.- A piece of history has been discovered at the Edmonson County Courthouse.

Crews working on the courthouse found the original bell that was part building in 1874.

The bell was originally in the courthouse’s cupola and was lowered down so restoration efforts can begin.

Once restored, the bell will not be placed back in the cupola, since the new one will not have openings, and the citizens would not be able to see it.

As of now, discussions of where to display the bell are taking place. Edmonson County Judge-Executive Wil Cannon said he was surprised a piece of history was so close.

“My great-great-grandparents probably heard this bell ring at some point. You can see the rope burns in the wood where they actually rang the bell,” Cannon said.

Cannon said he’ll potentially work with Preserving Edmonson Pride on a spot to display the bell.
