Hilltoppers Drop Pitching Duel to Marshall
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU Baseball dropped a low scoring affair to Marshall, 2-1, in its series opener on Friday night at Nick Denes Field.
The Hilltoppers held a 1-0 lead through five frames before The Herd used two runs in the sixth to take the lead and earn the eventual win.
“Against Friday night guys in this league when they open the door for you a little bit you have to be able to take advantage of it and we just weren’t able to do that today,” said head coach John Pawlowski. “We had a couple opportunities there in the first inning and then from there on he [Marshall starter Jeffrey Purnell] did an outstanding job, didn’t give us many opportunities at all after that.”
Devyn Terbrak earned the starting nod on the mound for WKU, surrendering just four hits and two runs while striking out three in 6.0 innings of action. Jake Kates closed out the final 3.0 frames, allowing just one hit and no runs while recording two strikeouts.
At the plate, the Hilltoppers tallied seven hits and three walks, with two players producing multi-hit performances. Ty Crittenberger and Tristin Garcia each went 2-for-3 in the contest, with Crittenberger adding an RBI.
