Hilltoppers Drop Game One Against Blue Hens

NEWARK, Del. — WKU Softball came up short on Thursday, dropping game one 6-3 against Delaware.

The Hilltoppers (36-11 overall, 18-7 CUSA) out-hit the Blue Hens five to three but were unable to capitalize.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Delaware opened the game with three runs in the first inning with a two-RBI single and a bases-loaded walk.
  • The Tops got their first run of the day in the top of the fifth thanks to a perfectly executed squeeze bunt from Anna Mauck.
  • The Blue Hens scored three more runs in the bottom of the third and sixth innings.
  • WKU started to work their way back into the game in the top of the seventh after Mauck collected her second RBI single of the day to score Maci Masters, reaching earlier with a walk.
  • Mauck’s RBI single closed the gap to 6-2, and Katie Murphy followed up with an RBI single of her own to score Kennedy Stinson who got on base with a double to right field.
  • Mauck and Murphy’s back-to-back RBI cut the lead to 6-3, but the Hilltoppers came up just short in the top of the seventh.

NOTABLES

  • Anna Mauck led in RBI with two on the day.
  • Erica Houge earned four strikeouts in her 5.0 innings of work.
  • Mauck was also the only Hilltopper to collect more than one hit.
  • WKU falls to 36-11 overall and 18-7 in Conference USA play.
