Hilltopper defense comes up clutch in win over Toldeo
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Instead of a one-hour rain delay slowing down the pace of the game between WKU and Toledo on Saturday evening, it somehow made the matchup even more exciting.
The Tops came out of that lightning delay trailing the Rockets by a score of 21-10, but it was WKU who was electrified by that lightning to outscore Toledo 16-0 when the teams were able to take the field again.
Quarterback Caden Veltkamp went on to record 242 total passing yards on the night, including a 44-yard touchdown pass to Kisean Johnson, as well as two rushing touchdowns of his own.
Not only was it a strong offensive performance from the Tops, but it was also a statement night for the defense, who had two game-winning stops at the end of the fourth quarter, and head coach Tyson Helton was quite impressed with their performance.
“ It’s one of the better performances I’ve been around defensively, to be honest with you,” Coach Helton said. “You know, it was awesome to watch our guys play. Our defensive staff was fantastic. The adjustments they made when we had the rain delay really, really helped us. Our defense stepped up time after time. So even though, you know, I’m out there coaching hard and all that, I was really proud of the performance that we had, you know, and it builds confidence.”
