Heart of Scottsville announces funding to improve downtown crosswalks

SCOTTSVILLE, Ky. – Improvements are coming to the Scottsville public square to make it a safer place for both locals and tourists.

Heart of Scottsville announced Monday that the GM on Main Street Program had awarded $60,000 to elevate two of the crosswalks in the center of the town, creating raised areas coming into the square.

The improvements will help both walkers and drivers by slowing down the traffic.

Ada Oliver, board president of Heart of Scottsville, says, “From my office, I see a lot of people crossing the street, and it’s always been pretty dangerous. And even myself, when I’m crossing the street, you have to be very careful just because of the flow of traffic.”

Lindy Casebier, secretary of the KY Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet, shared how he thinks this project will impact Scottsville residents.

He says, “It’s a testament to the Main Street director and to her board and to the locals of this community that they were able to join forces and go after this grant. And I think it’s just going to be an asset to the safety for the citizens of this community.”

The unusual layout of the square, with the crosswalks not aligned with the stop signs, creates the danger. Drivers accelerating after the stop encounter the crosswalks.

The construction is expected to be done by October or November. It is hoped that the other two crosswalks will also be elevated in the future.
