Healthy school lunches, try meal prepping

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Many people wish they could feed their kids more nutritionally dense meals at school. It may be a way to save money, reduce food waste and even give your kids more energy when they are at school.

Bethany Crask, a dietician with the Med Center in Bowling Green, recommends feeding children mainly lean proteins and fiber.

“The main goal of packing our lunches is to make sure our kids are fueled throughout the day. So fueling is going to come from a variety of things. Primarily, it’s going to come from protein and fiber,” Crask said.

In doing this they will be energized and feel more full than when eating carbs and other faster burning calories. In terms of preparing the food, Katie Biggs, owner of Fuel Nutrition in Bowling Green, recommends finding a meal prep regimen that works for your family.

“You can absolutely do it every day if you have the time and if you want to do that, and most people don’t. But the most common approach that you see is just meal prepping, typically on Sunday afternoons, or just whenever your day off is and just cooking in bulk and pre- portioning out those meal options to have. So it’s readily available for grab and go,” Biggs said.
