Halloween safety tips from Norton Children’s Hospital

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Halloween is fast approaching, but experts from Norton Children’s say safety comes first.

They say kids should wear brightly colored costumes to make sure drivers can see them, especially at night.

For darker costumes, add reflective tape to help them stand out. Masks and hoods can limit side vision, so be mindful of that as well.

But the most important tip is to always trick or treat in a group.

“If you’re an adult or an older child trick or treating with younger kids, be an example. Teach them how to safe crossly at crosswalks and not dart in between cars so that cars can see them easily if they’re on the street. On the flip side of that, if you’re an adult in the car driving, know that it is Halloween and kids are running around and they’re very excited, and sometimes they forget some of the things that we teach them. So just be slower and mindful and know that you’re looking for those kids that might come out of unexpected places,” Kinzie Evrard, Coordinator of Injury Prevention Programming for Norton Children’s, says.

She adds if your child is in a car seat that restricts their costume to try and put the harness on first.
