Habitat for Humanity Volunteer receives house

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Habitat for Humanity in Bowling Green has completed a home for a Bowling Green woman.

But this woman is just a little closer to the organization than most.

A woman helping dozens of people achieve their dream of owning a home was given the opportunity to own one herself.

Deshawna Maxey is a volunteer at habitat for humanity who is now boasting three years clean. She was given the keys to her very own home Friday.

“A lot of tears and a lot of sweat has gone into this whole process of me getting a house. When I got the keys in my hand it was almost like I was holding Luke Skywalker’s light saber. That’s how I felt,” said Maxey.

Rodney Goodman, the executive director of the organization, saying Maxey deserved a place to call home after working so hard to give that to others.

So, in April, when this unit became available, Habitat for Humanity began renovating to get it ready for her.

“She’s helped numerous other families receive this dream while she didn’t have it. Today was such a joy when she was signing the paperwork to know how far, how much she has grown and how much this is going to help her to grow in the future. I don’t know if I’ve had a prouder moment in my career than this,” said Goodman.

Maxey knew about the home but what she didn’t know was all the furniture inside had been donated to her as well.

“I feel ecstatic today. I’m glad that I have been blessed to be able to get a house and to be able to get it through Habitat after all the hard work they’ve put in working with me and the hard work I’ve put in on myself getting sober and adjusting to the day to day life of a Habitat ReStore employee,” said Maxey.

Maxey moved in today with her 8-year-old kitty named Bonita and plans to continue volunteering with the people who gave her a place to call home.
