Greenwood Gators will soon have their own auxiliary gym
BOWLING GREEN Ky.-Warren Central, South Warren, Warren East – all three have auxiliary gyms. All that’s left is Greenwood High School. As the Warren County student population grows, the sports teams at Greenwood High will need more space in the swamp. Warren County Chief Financial Officer Chris Mcintyre said this upcoming auxiliary gym will do just that.
“This is an awesome opportunity to expand opportunities for kids given the growth of this area. It’s pretty much endless as far as opportunities. The additional square footage makes a huge difference,” McIntyre said.
Greenwood High already has a main gym, and the auxiliary gym will be built right behind the school. All extracurricular teams can make use of the extra space. The Warren County Board of Education needs to first approve the bids before a finalized budget and date are revealed. As of now, the estimate to complete the project is $4.5 million.
Greenwood High Assistant Principal and athletics director Dan Dillingham said the idea of the auxiliary gym has already gotten good reception.
“We’re excited to have and auxiliary gym and thankful for it. It’s going to provide good opportunities for us both academically and athletically,” Dillingham said.
And the student athletes of Greenwood High can’t wait to try it out.
“With our late practices, the volleyball team has their practices, and we go in at like 8 at night. It’s late coming home,” Greenwood High basketball player Jacqueline Jackson said.
The overall goal is to enhance the athletic experience for students. When will it happen? The ball is in the court of the Kentucky Department of Education.
“It’s just going to be a great asset to the school and something we really need here and have needed for a while,” Dillingham said.
