Glasgow mother accused of abusing infant daughter

GLASGOW, Ky.- A 21-year-old mother from Glasgow is behind bars after authorities say she intentionally injured her 4-month-old daughter.

According to an arrest citation, on June 14, the Barren County Sheriff’s Office was alerted by Social Services of an infant from Glasgow that was being treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. When authorities arrived at the hospital they met with the infant’s parents. The arrest citation states that the child’s mother, Brittney Benigni, told investigators that she dropped her daughter on a table.

On June 24, Barren County investigators received the infant’s medical records. According to the arrest citation, the records stated that the girl may lose her eye sight and have other life altering injuries due to abusive head trauma.

Later in the day, authorities spoke with Benigni again, who this time told them she shook and struck her child multiple times on June 10, according to the citation. Benigni also told authorities she went outside to smoke a cigarette and put her headphones on to drown out the child’s cries. The citation goes on to say that Benigni admitted to another incident where she got upset and yanked the child’s legs and flipped her.

Benigni was arrested and charged with first-degree criminal abuse of a child-12 or under. She was lodged in the Barren County Detention Center and is being held on a $25,000 bond.
