NEW DETAILS: Tompkinsville man facing murder charge after crashing into residence

FOUNTAIN RUN, Ky. – A Tompkinsville man is facing a murder charge.
On Sunday, July 14 around 9:54 p.m., Kentucky State Police Post 15 troopers responded to a single-vehicle collision at 153 Main St. in Fountain Run.
Upon arrival, troopers say they located a destroyed vehicle, and the residence was heavily damaged. Troopers also located a man sitting up against a tree.
According to KSP, the subject was identified as Steven Chavis, 43 of Glasgow.
A preliminary investigation revealed Chavis was traveling south on Main Street in a 2006 Toyota 4-Runner when he entered a sharp left curve in the roadway, troopers say. Chavis was not able to make the turn and left the road, colliding with a residence, according to authorities.
The passenger of the vehicle, Kiah Glover, was flown to TriStar Skyline Medical Center for life-threatening injuries, where she was later pronounced dead.
Police say that upon contact with Chavis, they detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Chavis.
Chavis told troopers that he and Glover had been at the beach at Barren River Lake in Barren County. Chavis admitted to troopers that he had drunk alcoholic beverages earlier in the day. Trooper say Chavis refused medical treatment at the scene.
Speed, distracted driving and impairment are believed to be factors in the collision, KSP says.
Chavis is charged with operating vehicle under the influence alcohol/substance, murder, reckless driving, first-degree criminal mischief and possession of marijuana. Chavis is lodged at the Barren County Detention Center.
The investigation is ongoing.
