Glasgow man charged with reckless driving, assault of police officer

GLASGOW, Ky. – A Glasgow man is facing multiple charges in relation to alleged reckless driving on Sunday.
According to a uniform citation, an off-duty Kentucky State Police trooper stated he saw a vehicle traveling around 7:50 p.m. at high speeds going south in the wrong direction on Tompkinsville Road.
The uniform citation further states the trooper entered his marked patrol cruiser and attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, which allegedly reached 100 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone.
When the driver, identified as 35-year-old Brandon Netherton of Glasgow, stopped at a residence, he was instructed to stay inside the vehicle since the trooper was unarmed, authorities say.
The trooper stated he approached the vehicle with handcuffs and placed one handcuff on Netherton while explaining Netherton was under arrest.
According to the uniform citation, the driver refused to get out of the vehicle after multiple verbal commands, and the trooper stated he struck Netherton once with a closed fist. The trooper stated he contacted dispatch to tell them “the male was being combative and not obeying commands.”
Once the driver exited the car, the uniform citation states the trooper retrieved his patrol rifle before putting it back in his patrol car when he saw the driver was unarmed.
Authorities say the driver still refused to follow commands, stepping toward the trooper, which led the trooper to push the individual back before the driver threatened to physically harm the trooper.
When the driver attempted to strike the trooper, the trooper stated he avoided being hit and struck the driver twice.
The Barren County Sheriff’s Office then detained Netherton before troopers arrived on scene.
Netherton was transported to T.J. Samson Community Hospital and medically cleared before being lodged at the Barren County Detention Center.
He faces charges of speeding 26 mph or greater over the speed limit, reckless driving, first-degree fleeing or evading police (motor vehicle), resisting arrest, third-degree assault of police officer or probation officer (attempt), first-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer, menacing and possession of an open alcoholic beverage container in motor vehicle prohibited.
