Glasgow High School student honored for saving man’s life

GLASGOW, Ky.- Seconds can mean life or death during a medical emergency.

A Glasgow teen is being praised after successfully administering CPR.

Most people have heard the old saying ‘being at the right place, at the right time’. Well for Garrett Towe, that’s exactly what happened and now he’s being honored for his actions.

On Wednesday, Glasgow High School student, Garrett Towe was recognized by the Barren Metcalfe County EMS for his heroic actions, after he saved the life of a total stranger by successfully administering CPR.

“I just cried, and I think I get emotional every time I think about it. He’s seventeen and not a lot of people could do that. I don’t think I could do that. He thinks its not a big deal and he just thinks its something he was supposed to do,” said Garrett’s mother, Ashley Young

Nearly three weeks ago on December first, Towe and some of his friends were Bowling at Ralphie’s in Glasgow when suddenly the man bowling in the lane next to them collapsed… due to cardiac arrest.

Towe, who has been trained in CPR multiple times, sprang into action.

He was able to do chest compressions until EMS officials arrived.

“I thought he was just having a seizure. I saw everybody roll him over on his side and I thought it was fine. They noticed that he was turning blue and he had no pulse. I went over there and checked it out and he did not have a pulse so I just began CPR,” said Towe

Barren Metcalfe County EMS officials say that without Towe’s actions the outcome may have been very different.

“Him starting CPR before our crews arrived saved brain, saved heart muscle and ultimately enabled this patient to go home today,” said Barren Metcalfe County EMS Executive Director, Charles O’Neal
