Glasgow High School introduces Advanced Medicine program this year
Glasgow High School introduced a brand-new program this year, it’s called Advanced Medicine.
From text books… to life like mannequins…
The Advance Medicine class at Glasgow High School is providing students the opportunity to get a hands-on learning experience they wouldn’t get in a traditional classroom.
Around 100 students, like Garret Towe, are enrolled in the new program.
“It leads to a career in which I can better help people’s lives and make big differences. I enjoy learning about the body and how it works. I like being a part of the first year because we have to see everything we need to work out but also see the raw energy that comes with it.” says Towe, a Junior at GHS.
Glasgow High School decided to introduce the program after many students expressed an interest in medical careers.
“We just had lots of students that were going into the medical field really seeking advanced degrees, that wanted to be family physicians, pharmacists, physician’s assistants, ophthalmologists, pediatricians, all those things. So we wanted to offer that for our students really to give them a great foundation when they go to college and begin applying for medical schools. We want them to be highly competitive. “ says Dr. Amy Allen, the principal.
School officials want to provide as many tools as they can to help students succeed.
Amy Bowman is the School Nurse and also the teacher of the Advanced Medicine program.
“We are preparing them with the science, anatomy and physiology. We try to give them a through foundation with medical terminology and some clinical skills. We also include 21st century skills as well, things like resumes and professionalism, interview skills and practice and how to perform once they advance after graduation.” says Bowman.
Along with learning valuable skills in the classroom, students are also helping others in the community. They recently raised $1600 for the American Cancer Society.
