Glasgow Gaelic Gathering this weekend in Glasgow
GLASGOW, Ky. – At Yancey’s on June 16 – 18, the Glasgow Gaelic Gathering is taking the place of the decades long Highland Games.
Adam Dahmer, a doctor of Celtic studies, is looking to retain some Scottish tradition in Glasgow, Kentucky. Though he’s a Fisherville native, he says he’s gone to several Highland Games while growing up. Now having his doctoral degree, he wants to use his resources to keep up some Scottish tradition by reintroducing the Glasgow Gaelic Gathering.
Dahmer says the only Highland-esque thing going on will be a local bagpiper performing, but the event will be a more intellectual and social pursuit. Dahmer says there will be Gaelic language classes, dancing and an open market.
There’s a lot thrown into this Scottish escapade, but the resurrection of the Highland Games is definitely an idea in Dahmer’s mind, and he hopes to bring it back some day with a focus on the Gaelic language.
Dahmer says he wants to eventually turn Glasgow into a hub for Scottish culture in Kentucky. For more information, you can check out Glasgow Gaelic Gathering on Facebook.
