Glasgow-Barren County Community foundation to receive endowment for Glasgow seniors
GLASGOW Ky.- An announcement given by a representative from the Glasgow-Barren County Community Foundation involved a large endowment of $1 million. The endowment is coming from 1953 Glasgow High School graduate Rosemary Kopel Brown, and her husband John will help provide funding for 2 scholarships named after two long-tenured teachers. Mary Davis and Lee Smith.
“We’re tremendously excited about this. This is a gift that will be reinvested in our community through the lives of students. It’s going to impact students today, and students well into the future,” said President of the Glasgow-Barren County Community Foundation Terry Bunnell.
Past students are also thankful for the many opportunities provided by the Glasgow School district. Graduate Presley Parker was a recipient of the scholarship.
“In 2018, I received the award. It was a $5,000 renewable scholarship. I’ve used it for 2 years now. I’ll graduate next year, a year early. I’ll still get to use all the funds offered to me when I graduated,” Parker said.
The endowment will be able to provide $40,000 annually to keep both scholarships going strong. Current students said they’re thrilled about the opportunity, in addition to learning more of the impact of generosity.
“Not only would it help us in our future success as individuals, but the success of Glasgow as a whole. We’ll have more people getting education. We’ll have our community growing, and maybe in the future, we’ll have more people giving money like this to students,” said Glasgow High School senior Dinah Miranda.
With the chance to honor 2 longtime educators and give a generous gift, school staff say it all goes hand in hand with the mission of the Glasgow Scotties. Guide, inspire, succeed.
“It says a lot about the specialness that the Glasgow schools are known for. About the relationships that are there between students and teachers, and really what it means to be a Scottie,” said Glasgow High School Principal Dr. Amy Allen.
