Getting your home ready for cold weather

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- This week, we’ve been feeling a slight crispness in the air, a sign that cold weather is on the way in the coming months.

But before you get too excited to pick pumpkins or prepare for that first snowfall, there are a few steps you can take to save some money on your energy bill. Switching to LED lights around your home can help cut costs since they use less energy than standard bulbs. Unplugging electronics like TVs, gaming systems and computers can also make a difference, as they’re known as “energy vampires” because they still use power even when turned off.

And before the temperature really drops, it’s important to do some basic home maintenance checks to make sure your heating systems and insulation are ready for the colder months ahead.

“Seal your windows and doors. Make sure there’s no air coming from the outside. Also, it’s a great time to change your air filters and have your HVAC checked. Make sure everything’s in working order before you have to run it. And then, you know, if you’re cold, that’s not the time to get it done. So get it now. And also make sure you have enough insulation in your house. Those are great things to do right now that will get you ready for the cold weather,” said Kim Phelps, senior director of communication and public relations for Warren RECC.

Warren RECC currently has a partnership with TVA EnergyRight that will help you see how you can stay energy efficient during the cold months. They can help you with tips and will even send you a box filled with some supplies like caulk and weather stripping to help you stay energy efficient.
