Geocaching class brings a worldwide activity to South Central Kentucky

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -Think of it as a high-tech scavenger hunt. Geocaching is a world-wide activity but you may not think of South Central Kentucky as a place to look for hidden “treasures.”

Lost River Cave periodically hosts geocaching classes to teach attendees about finding hidden objects using satellite coordinates. The latest class was held Sunday.

People who attended learned exactly what geocaching is and the equipment they need to find the hidden object. And although geocaching used to require a hand-held GPS unit, now smartphone apps make the activity cheaper and more accessible. Aside from the cost of your smartphone or a GPS unit, geocaching is free to start.  More advanced geocaching often requires buying a subscription a geocaching website to get access to the coordinates of the objects.

Danny Bays, the instructor of the geocaching class, says geocaching combines multiple forms of recreation, including walking and hiking.
