From roller coasters to rockets, students show off their engineering prowess
GLASGOW Ky. – The Barren County Steam Showcase highlighted students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, art and math. Students set up booths to present their hard work from homemade roller coasters to rockets.
In addition to the event being a showcase, it was also a friendly competition. Each grade participated in time trials, such as building the highest house of cards and ramps. Barren County School’s district curriculum coordinator, Tara Grifith, said the competition aspect is beneficial for work in this field.
“We hear so much about STEM, that we truly have to show them what that is. We have to immerse that into being engineers and being able to be presented with a problem on the spot and solve,” Grifith said
With a night full of presentations and competitions, two Barren County High School seniors, Jared Tunks and Travis Penduigraft, talked about what they’ll always remember in their fields.
“Definitely the opportunities that are unique to Barren County, we’re the only school anywhere that I can think of that has allowed kids to do what we’ve done here. It’s just a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Tunks said.
“Take advantage of every opportunity that is set at your feet, but don’t wait for things to be set at your feet. Part of what we’ve been taught is you’ve got to work for it. If there’s something you want to do, talk to people, ask people. The people here at Barren County will supply you, they will work with you to get you that opportunity and to get you where you want to be in life. Take advantage of opportunities that are given to you, but also look for new ones as you go along,” Penduigraft said.
