Fresh fruit and vegetable grant comes to schools in Barren County

GLASGOW Ky.-Three Barren County Elementary Schools are recipients of the Federal Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program Grant, which is regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, totaling just over $40,000.

The three schools to receive this grant are Park City Elementary, Austin Tracy Elementary, and Hiseville Elementary.

The grant provides opportunities for the kids to enjoy more healthy options during the day. Fresh fruits and veggies are even delivered to the kids while they’re in class.

School nurse at Hiseville Elementary school, Tiffany Wyatt, is one of those who delivers the healthy snacks. She said it’s a great feeling to do so.

“The kids love it. They’re so excited whenever I come to the room to give them fruits and vegetables,” Wyatt said.

School selection for this grant was based on submitted applications from schools where half or more students are eligible for free or reduced lunch.
