Free meals provided to Kentucky children through Summer Food Service Program

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Kentucky Department of Education is working to make sure Kentucky children don’t go hungry.

This summer, from June through August, a release by the department states the Summer Food Service Program will provide meals for free to children 18 and under from low-income families.

The department says it partners with school districts and other organizations across the Commonwealth to bring nutritious meals and educational activities to communities.

This year, over 2,000 sites will serve meals to Kentucky children, a number that has increased annually, according to the release.

In rural areas, the release states meals may be available for multiple days and in some cases, provided to-go to children, parents or guardians.

The Summer Food Service Program is part of the National Summer Food Service Program, a federally funded program operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. To learn more, visit the USDA Summer Meals for Kids Site Finder webpage or call the USDA Hunger Hotline at (866) 348-6479.
