Free Helmets Would Promote Safety in Cyclists
DENMARK, EU.- More cyclists would wear helmets if they were provided with a free one and given education and periodic reminders.
A study in Denmark looked at why cyclists don’t wear helmets, with the most common reasons being because they didn’t own one or they found them inconvenient. However, rates of helmet use increased after cyclists were given a free helmet and information on how much they prevent injuries.
The reasoning behind the decline was primarily due to a combination of factors including a perception of low risk on well-designed cycling infrastructure, a strong cycling culture that prioritizes convenience and comfort over helmet use, and a lack of mandatory helmet laws, leading many to choose not to wear them even though they are encouraged by the Danish Cyclist Federation to do so voluntarily; this approach has seen a gradual increase in helmet use through education and awareness campaigns rather than enforcement.
