Former judicial secretary indicted on theft and evidence tampering charges

FRANKLIN, Ky. – A Simpson County grand jury indicted a former judicial secretary who is accused of stealing grant monies intended for official court use.

Anna K. Smith, 28, of Franklin, worked as the judicial secretary for Simpson Circuit Judge Janet Crocker and was responsible for overseeing grant funding that pays the bills for alternative sentencing programs for drug offenders, Kentucky State Police Detective Matt Travis said.

A grand jury indicted Smith April 10 on one count of theft by failure to make required disposition of property over $10,000 when she “misappropriated” approximately $28,152 in grant funding by authorizing checks to herself, according to her indictment.

She was also charged with tampering with physical evidence accused of falsifying bank records, according to the indictment.

Simpson County Jail records do not show Smith as ever being an inmate.

Smith is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon.
