Following the growth of BikeWalk BG

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- You may have noticed those bike lanes pop up throughout Bowling Green, allowing cyclists to share the roadway with vehicles. That’s all thanks to one organization. BikeWalk BG began in 2018 with just a few bikes, a trailer, and some repair equipment.

Thanks to the organization, the City of Bowling Green has seen safer walkways for people, free bike repairs, free lessons for school children and so much more.

BikeWalk BG wants to continue to push for safer spaces for folks to be able to walk throughout the city.

One way you can help them out? By purchasing Kentucky’s Share the Road license plate at your local county clerk. You can learn more about the purchasing process and the cost by clicking right here.

Natasha Smith, the plan reviewer for BikeWalk BG says, if you aren’t able to give back you can always help by keeping some helpful road tips in mind.

Smith says, “When you’re a driver, just keep your eyes open and actually pay attention to your driving. And when you get to an intersection, expect that it’s not just cars at the intersection, but people are using the sidewalks, too.”

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet reported on the rise of accidents this year, saying, “Pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities have steadily been on the rise in Kentucky over the last five years. Motorists are not always to blame for incidents involving pedestrians and cyclists – be attentive to your surroundings and make yourself easily visible while walking or biking on or near roadways. Be sure to wear a proper-fitting helmet while cycling as well.”

There will be a ride with BikeWalk BG this Saturday, starting at Lampkin Park at 8:00 A.M. This ride is completely free and open to all who want to join, but it is listed for confident riders. You can read more about this event by clicking right here.

You can always help this organization by volunteering as well, you can find more information on their website by clicking right here.
