Floral shops finalizing flower orders for Mother’s Day

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Valentine’s Day is often the busiest day of the year when it comes to flower sales, orders, and deliveries at most local flower shops.

But Mother’s Day isn’t far behind, and it’s not too late to place those orders.

“I think that there’s almost more excitement with Mother’s Day than there is with Valentine’s Day,” said Ellen Buchanon, owner of Deemer’s Flowers in Bowling Green.

Every year on the second Sunday in May, mothers are celebrated for everything they do on a day-to-day basis.

“It’s being with your family,” said MacKenzie’s Flowers owner Roiann Ridley. “It’s really remembering the women in your life, I think – honoring the women.”

Giving moms flowers is the most popular way to honor them and show appreciation for what they do, which makes this time of year especially busy for local flower shops like MacKenzie’s Flowers and Deemer’s Flowers, among several others.

“Everybody works extra days during the week,” Buchanon said. “Then we’ll be working late tonight, tomorrow night, Friday night. We try to get all the orders done at night so that we can be ready to get them delivered the next day.”

“You know we do the best we can and go on the previous year,” added Ridley. “There’s not a lot we can do to prepare until the orders actually come in. It’s bedlam.”

With all the craziness that ensues in these shops ahead of Mother’s Day, it takes a lot of advanced planning to be ready for the high volume of orders both shops receive the weeks leading up to the annual holiday.

“The main thing we have to do is order our flowers ahead of time,” said Buchanon. “We always get a lot of extra flowers in, which is really nice for customers this time of year.”

Buchanon and Ridley are both mothers themselves.

They enjoy spending time with their families on Mother’s Day, but both can better tell you how much it means to them to receive a beautiful bouquet of flowers as a small token of gratitude for everything they do.

“It’s the ‘wow’ effect,” Ridley said. “We deliver emotions. The flowers are just the vehicle. What we deliver is a big wow that says how much they love someone.”

Deemer’s is taking Mother’s Day orders through Saturday. MacKenzie’s is taking Mother’s Day orders through Friday.
