Flood impacts
SOUTH CENTRAL, KY.- Agencies like the Army Corps of Engineers, Emergency Management, and TVA are calling this weather system a historic weather event. The heavy rain could impact damns, but to prepare the TVA will have twelve gates open lowering the lake level.
Adam May with TVA media relations was on the scene. He tells us, “We’ll be spilling approximately 1 million gallons per second as we’ll be creating storage in the reservoir. And we’ll be able to take on some of this water with heavy rain expected this week, hopefully mitigate some flooding.”
Lessening the risk of rising waters here in Southcentral Kentucky is also being monitored by the local agencies. Travis Puckett with Warren County Emergency Management says, “They’re still above what they call the winter pool. When they let it down in the winters and then let it come back up in the summers, they’re still above that. And releasing water. So when the dams and the lakes release water, we see that it affects downstream.”
The safety of all Kentucky residents is top priority. you are encouraged to remain weather aware, and if you are in an area that’s prone to flood, emergency management urges everyone to evacuate.
