Firefighters respond to fire at former Russellville landfill

RUSSELLVILLE, Ky. – Multiple agencies responded Monday for a fire at the site of a former landfill in Russellville.

Russellville chief Cheryl Allen says units were dispatched to the scene at the waste management on Coopertown Road.

Lewisburg Rural, Olmstead Rural, Adairville Rural, Auburn Rural and Logan Aluminum Fire departments also responded over the size of the fire, officials say.

Allen confirmed the fire burned several acres and caught the gas pipe system on fire that runs through the landfill.

Crews remained on the scene for about two hours, officials say, and firefighters returned to check the area and extinguish small fires caused by the burning pipe system. Allen says some small spot fires would remain from the gas pipe system until they burned out or the supply was turned off.

Allen says the cause of the fire may have been a lawn mower that was being used.

The Logan County Ambulance Service and Logan County Chaplin also assisted at the scene.
