CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Annual fire hydrant testing is underway in Clarksville, Tennessee and will continue throughout city limits over the next two to three months, the city stated Thursday.

According to a social media post by the city, Clarksville Fire Rescue conducts the annual flow and pressure tests on each city-owned fire hydrant to be sure they are adequate and working properly for firefighting.

Clarksville Gas & Water personnel also test hydrants throughout the year as part of a state-required maintenance program, the city says.

During this process, the city says fire hydrants are opened to let water flush out for several minutes to hours to remove sediment and iron compounds. Regularly doing this ensures water in main lines remains fresh and clean, according to the city.

The city says residents may notice discolored water as sediment is stirred up, however, city officials say this does not affect the safety of the water.

If discoloration occurs, the city advises residents to turn all household cold water faucets on and to let them run for several minutes to help clear household pipes.

In addition, the city says residents may also notice low water pressure or water running on streets.

Hydrant testing flushing schedules can be found here.
