Feel Good Friday: Hive Society marks 10 Years with Soirée

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WNKY) — The Hive Society celebrated its 10th anniversary this week with its Annual Cocktail Soirée, highlighting a decade of growth and support for families across south central Kentucky.

Founder and Executive Director Laura Orsland reflected on the organization’s journey, which began with her search for opportunities for her son after high school.

“The whole idea of the Hive came from me having a deep and gripping fear and dread,” Orsland said. “I wanted him to have a place and some people outside of our house that would stimulate him, welcome him, and care for him just like he is.”

Orsland said the organization has survived challenges, including the pandemic and devastating tornadoes, while continuing to provide activities and support for individuals with disabilities and their families.

“Looking back, I’m reminded that every step wasn’t just about growth,” Orsland said. “It was about our people, these incredible families and individuals. That’s why this model is being sought elsewhere, because the Hive isn’t just about numbers. It’s about lives changed.”

Families shared how the Hive has impacted their lives. David Hutchison, whose son has attended the Hive since 2017, said it provides a critical bridge between school and adulthood.

“Since my son graduated high school in 2017 and started at the Hive, he’s enjoyed every chance to go there, being with the other young people, welcomed by the staff, and all the activities he can be involved in,” Hutchison said.

He added that the Hive fills a role that families cannot provide on their own. “It provides a bridge to something in adult life that will be as fulfilling, an opportunity to be with others, to keep them active, learning self-help and independent living skills. It really fits so many needs.”

Orsland told attendees that the organization is now preparing to expand into Allen County to serve more families. She credited the community for sustaining the Hive through its first decade.

“Tonight is not just about a celebration, it’s a celebration of you and your generosity,” Orsland said. “This incredible community has carried us through ten years of growth, resilience, and love.”

The Hive Society, founded in 2015, operates as a nonprofit organization providing programs, activities, and support for individuals with disabilities and their families.
