Feeding America Kentucky’s Heartland, volunteers distribute food to families in need

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Families who need a helping hand when it comes to food are being served by Feeding America Kentucky’s Heartland.

All it takes is proof of residence, a certain income level or age bracket to receive the food.

The program is distributing tons of food to families in Warren County with the help of volunteers.

There are three categories of food to distribute on the last Wednesday of every month.

Those include senior boxes for those 60 and over whose income meets the level.

There’s trade mitigation food provided by the government such as oranges, milk, pork and cranberries.

Lastly, they hand out food that big manufacturers and the post office, who collects food during the Stamp Out, donate.

The majority of the food is provided through the Temporary Emergencies Food Assistant Program (TEFAP) through the USDA.

On average, 500 households or less are provided food during the distributions.

Johnalma Barnett with Mount Zion Baptist Church says the families rely on this especially those living in food deserts.

Warren County is the largest of 42 counties Feeding America Kentucky’s Heartland provides food to.

Jamie Sizemore, the Executive Director of Feeding America Kentucky’s Heartland, says volunteers are always needed.

However, on Wednesday there were several volunteers helping from Reinhart Foods, Camping World, and WellCare.
