Feed and Read takes the library and grocery store to local communities
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Warren County Public Library is known for feeding the mind with books and entertainment for every interest and age.
This spring, the library, along with Megan’s Mobile Grocery, who delivers low-cost nutritional groceries, is taking “Feed and Read” on the road.
The duo carves a path of regular stops each weekday through the food deserts in Bowling Green.
“We target neighborhoods we know don’t have the transportation and have the need for food and to be able to get the groceries brought to them, so we have stuff at affordable prices,” said Lori Richey. “They can just come and shop.”
Not only can you request that a book be delivered on the bookmobile, but with a valid ID you can also get a library card on the spot. You can also get access to the seed library.
Residents can check out up to five packs of seeds at once and learn how to grow their own food.
“Being able to get them in smaller amounts makes them more user friendly,” said Elizabeth Rheaume. “It lets you try different varieties that you might not have had access to, because we get a lot of different varieties, so I think that makes for an exciting way to sample something to see how you like it.”
Seeds for flowers, fruits, vegetables and herbs are available in the bookmobile and each of the local library branches.
