Fake music instrument bust nets $18M in bogus Gibson guitars at US border
LOS ANGELES (CNN, KCAL, KCBS, WPTV) – A massive multi-agency bust at the U.S. port has found $18 million in bogus Gibson guitars.
Federal authorities busted what is being called the largest fake music instrument scam ever.
U.S. customs agents seized 3,000 counterfeit Gibson electric guitars in a cargo container at the port of Los Angeles as part of a multi-agency sting.
Officials say the bogus guitars were likely ear-marked to sell to unsuspecting customers in online markets.
It’s not the strangest Gibson guitar grift on record – that honor still belongs to the Canadian man who stole an $8,000 Les Paul by shoving it down his pants.
Still, it is the most valuable to the tune of $18 million, the retail value of a similar haul of genuine Gibsons.
