Extreme heat sets in

(NBC News) Volunteers have been delivering free air conditioners around St. Louis, where the center of the country is also the center of a major heat wave.

Detroit, Chicago, Washington and plenty of points in between are all expected to have near-triple digit highs by the weekend.

Severe heat advisories have also been issued from South Carolina to New Jersey.

New York City is just one spot expecting dangerously high temperatures by Friday.

“We’re entering a heat emergency that will be extremely hot, potentially dangerous weather this weekend,” says Mayor Bill de Blasio.

The heat wave is not expected to break any daytime records, but overnight lows in the mid 80s might break a few.
